About Me

Chuck Baker is Right! Well, I am. What I mean is that my friends always joke that I’m always right (or at least I think I am). The thing is I don’t say anything, unless I know I’m right. So it's not that I’m right about everything, but usually when I speak I know what I’m talking about. My dad always said, “Don’t speak unless you know your right.” This blog includes many subjects like religion, politics, business, movies, sports, and more. The One Minute Manager

The One Minute Manager is a book by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson.  It is a simple concept on how to manage people.  I've used this concept in my own management style.  Here I outline the One Minute Manager that I use.

I.  Goal Setting

A)  Goals

            1)  Store/Team:  Set at least 3 different goals in 3 different areas that you can measure. Examples are goals for sales, new accounts, and customer satisfaction.  Then break down goals based on things like LY sales, sales plan, and a stretch goal.

            2)  Individual Goal:  Just as you set 3 different goals in 3 different areas for the store/team you need to do the same for each team member.

            3)  Set Daily, Weekly, and Monthly goals for your store/team and all the team members.

            4)  The store and everyone in it should know what is expected each day.

            5)  Goals should be posted, so everyone will know what you expect.

            6)  It is important that goals are easy to read and easy to understand.

II.  Praising

A)  Look for Opportunities to Praise

            1)  Always be looking for ways to tell someone what a good job they did.

            2)  When an employee does something well thank them for their hard work.

B)  Don’t Praise to just to Praise

            1)  The praise should be genuine.

            2)  Praise someone when they do something out of the ordinary or something to really impacted the business.

            3)  Praise basd on a person's ability.  A new person will need praise when they learn new things and a person that has been working for awhile will need to be praised for achieving a new level of success.

C)  Ways to Praise a Single Person

            1)  Tell them what they did right.

            2)  Tell them how it made you feel.

            3)  Touch them with a hand shake, hi-five, or pat on the back.

            4)  Have employee of the month awards.  It can be a plaque or just on a piece of paper.  Make it something special.

            5)  Find different ways to make someone’s day.

D)  Ways to Praise a Group or Team

            1)  Tell them what they did right.

            2)  Tell them how it made you feel.

            3)  Do a special award.

            4)  Take them to dinner, buy them pizza, or donuts.

            5)  Find different ways to make their day.

One Minute Praising should take no more than one minute.  Don’t overdue it.  Remember KISS, Keep It Simple Silly.

III.  Reprimand

A)  Do It Now.

            1)  When someone does something wrong tell them right immediately.  Don’t wait.

            2)  Tell them exactly what they did wrong and how to do it right.

            3)  Re-train a person if they don’t understand or need more help.

B)  Ways to Reprimand a person or group

            1)  Tell them what they did wrong.

            2)  Tell them how it made you feel.

            3)  Tell them how to do it right.

            4)  Keep it under One Minute.

            5)  Praise them

C)  Don’t Ever Do

            1)  Don’t Ever Start a Reprimand with “You are a good employee, but,” this will  only scare the person every time you do praise them.  They will fear the hammer that is about to drop.  After the reprimand is complete, tell them that you still believe in them and think they are a good employee.

One Minute Reprimands should take no more than one minute.  Don’t overdue it.  Have a plan on how you and the person or group are going to fix the problem.

That is it.  One Minute Management is simple but effective.
