1. Proverbs 5:3-4: For the
lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a
double-edged sword.
The adulteress is a
prostitute. When ever you see a prostitute in the Bible
it can have a double meaning. This could
be as simple as the prostitute for money for sex. Of course this will lead anyone down a wrong
path. It can lead to a broken marriage,
hurt kids, disease, and away from the pursuit of wisdom.
A prostitute can be about the priestess of Baal. They were used as a way for men to have sex in worship of Baal. The prostitute can
be an example of anything that leads us to worship anything other than God. It can be sex, money, fame, pride, or any
other sin.
2. Proverbs 5:15: Drink
water from your own cistern, running water from your own well.
Another way to say it is, “Share
love only with your wife.” When a man or
a woman gives in to the temptation of adultery they destroy the peace and love
in their life. Also when a spouse turns
away from God and their loved one for anything else it destroys the person and other lives. If a job is more important
than your wife, then that person will wake up someday alone. Love can be shared with God and family, but
it can’t be shared with sin.
3. Proverbs 5:18-19: May your
fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer —may her breasts satisfy
you always, may you ever be captivated by her love.
For me this speaks directly
to men. I think men more than women can
be pulled away by the sin of lust. I
believe this happens when men stop showing love to their wives. If we take our wife for granted, if we forget
to romance them, if we forget to say, “I love you,” or “You are so beautiful,” then we begin to
tear down that fountain. Men should do
and say these things not as much for her, but for us. When we express our love to our wife on a
daily basis we remind ourselves of our love for her. Woman was given to man as a companion and
a lover.
