I've been seeing people post that the Coronavirus mortality rate is between 98% to 98. 5% as if that isn't a big deal. The first big thing to know is that the seasonal flu has a mortality rate of 99.9%. But look at the numbers more and what that actually means.
Currently, the infection rate in the U.S. is about 18% of those tested. In a country with 330 million people that equals almost 60 million people potentially getting infected. If 1.5% to 2% die we are talking about between 900,000 and 1.2 million people dying. And we are talking about it happening in a few short months. And if the infection rate increases it could be even worse.
NYC has seen an infection rate of almost 30%. That could result in 40,000 deaths in NYC alone. China has already lied about there only being 3000 deaths in Wuhan. It is more likely over 40,000 people have died.
We needed to take this very seriously and because we did take the social distancing seriously the projections of death in the US has gone down to 60,000. Had we done nothing we might have seen millions of deaths.
