The Engagement Ring

The gift of a diamond engagement ring has been traditional since the fifteenth century. Mary of Burgundy is said to be the first woman to receive a diamond engagement ring. Her suitor, Archduke Maximilian of Austria broke with the tradition of a woman moving her wedding ring to the left hand after marriage. He wanted to give her another ring that would be more grand than the wedding ring. This would be come known as the engagement ring.
