About Me

Chuck Baker is Right! Well, I am. What I mean is that my friends always joke that I’m always right (or at least I think I am). The thing is I don’t say anything, unless I know I’m right. So it's not that I’m right about everything, but usually when I speak I know what I’m talking about. My dad always said, “Don’t speak unless you know your right.” This blog includes many subjects like religion, politics, business, movies, sports, and more. What is the Law?

Ceremonial Law relates to Israel’s worship.  The primary purpose was to point to the messiah.  After the death and resurrection of Jesus the ceremonial laws were no longer needed.  While we are not bound by those laws, the principles behind them to worship and love God still apply.  If we look at the different offerings in Leviticus we can see their purpose, significance, and how they relate to Christ.

Burnt Offering

Leviticus 1:1-13;  The LORD called to Moses and spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting. He said, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When any of you brings an offering to the LORD, bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock. “ ‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he is to offer a male without defect. He must present it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting so that it will be acceptable to the LORD.  He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.  He is to slaughter the young bull before the LORD, and then Aaron’s sons the priests shall bring the blood and sprinkle it against the altar on all sides at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.  He is to skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. The sons of Aaron the priest are to put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire.  Then Aaron’s sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat, on the burning wood that is on the altar.  He is to wash the inner parts and the legs with water, and the priest is to burn all of it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD. “ ‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep or the goats, he is to offer a male without defect.  He is to slaughter it at the north side of the altar before the LORD, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall sprinkle its blood against the altar on all sides. He is to cut it into pieces, and the priest shall arrange them, including the head and the fat, on the burning wood that is on the altar.  He is to wash the inner parts and the legs with water, and the priest is to bring all of it and burn it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.

Purpose:  Payment for general sins
Significance:  Showed a person’s devotion to God
Related to Christ because Christ was the perfect offering.

Grain Offering

Leviticus 2:1-10;“ ‘When someone brings a grain offering to the LORD, his offering is to be of fine flour. He is to pour oil on it, put incense on it and take it to Aaron’s sons the priests. The priest shall take a handful of the fine flour and oil, together with all the incense, and burn this as a memorial portion on the altar, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD. The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the offerings made to the LORD by fire. “ ‘If you bring a grain offering baked in an oven, it is to consist of fine flour: cakes made without yeast and mixed with oil, or wafers made without yeast and spread with oil. If your grain offering is prepared on a griddle, it is to be made of fine flour mixed with oil, and without yeast.  Crumble it and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering.  If your grain offering is cooked in a pan, it is to be made of fine flour and oil.  Bring the grain offering made of these things to the LORD; present it to the priest, who shall take it to the altar.  He shall take out the memorial portion from the grain offering and burn it on the altar as offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD. The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the offerings made to the LORD by fire.

Purpose:  To show honor and respect to God in worship.
Significance:  Acknowledges that all we have belongs to God.
Christ was perfect and gave all of himself to God and others.

Peace Offering

Leviticus 3:1-5; “ ‘If someone’s offering is a fellowship offering, and he offers an animal from the herd, whether male or female, he is to present before the LORD an animal without defect. He is to lay his hand on the head of his offering and slaughter it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. Then Aaron’s sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood against the altar on all sides. From the fellowship offering he is to bring a sacrifice made to the LORD by fire: all the fat that covers the inner parts or is connected to them, both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the covering of the liver, which he will remove with the kidneys.  Then Aaron’s sons are to burn it on the altar on top of the burnt offering that is on the burning wood, as an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.

Purpose:  To express gratitude to God
Significance:  Symbolized peach and fellowship with God
We now fellowship with God through our personal relationship with Christ.

Sin Offering

Leviticus 4:1-2;  The LORD said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites: ‘When anyone sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD'S commands.

Purpose:  Payment for sins of uncleanness, neglect, or thoughtlessness
Significance:  Showed the seriousness of sin, even when we don’t know about the sin
Christ’s death wipes away all sin

Guilt Offering

Leviticus 5:1-6; “ ‘If a person sins because he does not speak up when he hears a public charge to testify regarding something he has seen or learned about, he will be held responsible. “ ‘Or if a person touches anything ceremonially unclean—whether the carcasses of unclean wild animals or of unclean livestock or of unclean creatures that move along the ground —even though he is unaware of it, he has become unclean and is guilty. “ ‘Or if he touches human uncleanness —anything that would make him unclean —even though he is unaware of it, when he learns of it he will be guilty. “ ‘Or if a person thoughtlessly takes an oath to do anything, whether good or evil —in any matter one might carelessly swear about—even though he is unaware of it, in any case when he learns of it he will be guilty. “ ‘When anyone is guilty in any of these ways, he must confess in what way he has sinned  and, as a penalty for the sin he has committed, he must bring to the LORD a female lamb or goat from the flock as a sin offering; and the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin.

Purpose:  Payment for sins against God and others.
Significance:  Provided compensation for injured parties.
Christ’s death takes away the consequences of sin…death.

Galatians 3:24-25; So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.

Civil Law dictated Israel’s daily living.  Because modern society is so different, many of these guidelines are not useful today.  But the principles behind the laws should guide our conduct.

Deuteronomy 24:10-13 When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not go into his house to get what he is offering as a pledge. Stay outside and let the man to whom you  are making the loan bring the pledge out to you. If the man is poor, do not go to sleep with his pledge in your possession.  Return his cloak to him by sunset so that he may sleep in it.  Then he will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the LORD your God.

The principles behind most of these laws were to about how we should justly treat each other on a daily basis.  We should treat each other with respect and how we want to be treated.  But the specifics should not be used to say this is the only way to live and be right with God.  We are made right now because we keep the Jewish laws, but because of Christ.

Galatians 3:28-29; There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Moral Laws are direct commands from God like the Ten Commandments.  It reveals the nature of God and still applies today.  We are to obey the moral law, to please God, but not to receive salvation.

Exodus 20:1-3; And God spoke all these words. “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me.

Every commandment from the Ten Commandments are still useful today and should be followed today.  Christ talked about the importance of each commandment.  He also summed up the commandments with Love the Lord your God and Love one another.

Galatians 5:14; The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Christ is the fulfillment of the Law and through Him we are made completly clean before God.
